Religion

The Catholic Church and Catholic schools have a social mandate to be open to all who wish to benefit from a faith-based education. While Catholic schools must remain grounded in the tradition and teachings of the Catholic Church, we respect the wishes of parents and caregivers who exercise their right to choose Catholic education.

St. Mary School is committed to creating and sustaining schools that are centres of learning founded on a common faith in Jesus Christ as understood within the Catholic tradition. They also strive to create schools that encourage children to develop their individual gifts and talents in an atmosphere characterized by both freedom and the moral responsibility found in the teaching of the Catholic Church.

FAITH FORMATION

FIRST COMMUNION

The sacrament of First Communion is an important tradition for Catholic families and individuals. For Catholics, Holy Communion is the third of seven sacraments received. It occurs only after receiving Baptism, and once the person has reached the age of reason at second grade.

Your child’s second grade year is an opportunity for parents to reaffirm their commitment to the Catholic faith and to become refreshed and renewed in their faith life. This renewed commitment involves developing a genuine desire to participate in the Eucharist and the sacramental life of the Church.

THE APOSTLES' CREED

I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ,

his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended into hell;
on the third day he rose

again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of

God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge

the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Amen.
